How to use a TeamViewer ID and password

TeamViewer identifies every device by a permanent numeric ID and protects each connection with a password. Here’s how the two fit together.

The two pieces

  • ID — a fixed nine- or ten-digit number for that specific device. It never changes.
  • Password — either a random one-time password that changes each session, or an unattended password you set for permanent access.

To connect to someone

  • Ask the person at the remote machine to open TeamViewer and read you their ID and the current password.
  • On your machine, type their ID into the “Partner ID” box and click Connect.
  • Enter the password when prompted. You’re now viewing their screen.

Sharing IDs and passwords safely

  • Prefer one-time passwords for ad-hoc help; they’re useless after the session ends.
  • Never post an unattended password in chat or email in plain text.
  • Set unattended access only on machines you genuinely need to reach without someone present.

A simpler join for non-technical users

Reading a ten-digit ID and a password over the phone is a lot to ask of a stressed, non-technical person. That friction is exactly what we removed in SimDesk: the technician generates a one-time code from the ticket, the customer runs a small app and clicks Allow — no permanent ID to read out, and nothing left listening afterwards. See how the flow works on the remote support page.
